Real Life Story

The first activity of the day in Mr. Rabine's preschool classroom is "music group." During this activity, Mr. Rabine finds many natural opportunities to teach Jake to imitate him. For example, Mr. Rabine lets each child select a musical instrument. Mr. Rabine asks Jake to imitate his use of the selected instrument. Mr. Rabine provides praise for correct imitations and prompts for incorrect responses.

The next activity of the day is snack time. Here, too, Mr. Rabine finds many opportunities to teach Jake imitation skills. For example, Mr. Rabine says to all the children, "Whoever wants a snack should do this," while raising his hand. He then assists Jake as needed to raise his hand in imitation. Mr. Rabine provides praise for correct imitations and prompts for incorrect responses. A little while later, Mr. Rabine turns to Jake and says, "Yummy snack!" while patting his tummy. He waits to see if Jake will imitate this action and provides prompts as needed to help him imitate the action. Mr. Rabine will continue this strategy, using many additional opportunities to teach Jack to imitate actions throughout the day.
